Advanced Prompt Patterns

Beyond zero-shot and few-shot, a small library of reusable patterns covers 80% of LLM application requirements. These are battle-tested patterns from Anthropic's official guidance, OpenAI's prompt engineering guide, and production engineering practice.

Pattern 1: XML structuring

XML tags are the most reliable way to separate components in a prompt — especially for Claude, which is trained to attend to XML structure carefully.

When to use XML: - Complex prompts with multiple distinct sections - Separating user-provided content from instructions (prevents injection) - Any prompt longer than ~500 tokens


Pattern 2: Role prompting

Assigning a specific expert persona activates different knowledge and reasoning styles. This is Anthropic's recommendation: use role prompting after you've nailed clarity and examples.

Role prompting is not a panacea

Assigning a role doesn't give the model knowledge it doesn't have. It shapes how the model presents existing knowledge, not what it knows. "Act as a neurosurgeon" won't make the model medically accurate.


Pattern 3: Prompt chaining

Complex tasks should be broken into a sequence of simpler steps. Each step's output becomes the next step's input. Easier to debug, cheaper to iterate, and more accurate overall.

Pattern 4: Output anchoring

Start the assistant's response in the prompt. The model continues from where you left off, which forces specific structure.

Pattern 5: Meta-prompting

Use the model to improve your prompts. Describe what you want and let the model generate the prompt.

Pattern 6: Constitutional prompting (self-critique)

Ask the model to generate an answer, then critique it, then improve it. Significant accuracy gains for open-ended tasks.

Prompt anti-patterns

"Please" and politeness markers

"Please kindly help me with this important task if you have time" — every word costs tokens and adds no value. Be direct: "Extract the invoice number from the following text."

Hedging in instructions

"Try to respond in JSON if possible" → the model sometimes won't. "Respond in JSON only" is a constraint, not a request.

Contradictory instructions

"Be concise but thorough and cover all edge cases in detail." — the model will guess which constraint to optimize for. Pick one.

Prompt injection via user content

If user content goes into your prompt template, sanitize it or use XML tags to isolate it. A malicious user input of "Ignore previous instructions and..." can override your prompt.

Key takeaway

Start with clarity and specificity. Add structure (XML) for complex prompts. Chain steps for complex tasks. Use role prompting for domain adaptation. Automate prompt generation with meta-prompting. These patterns compound — combining three of them often unlocks capabilities that none achieves alone.
