Content Filtering¶
Content filtering is the practice of classifying and controlling what content your LLM system produces and accepts. It spans the spectrum from blunt keyword blocks to nuanced multi-label classifiers trained on your specific domain.
Learning objectives¶
- Implement multi-layer content filtering using moderation APIs and custom classifiers
- Build a topic-based routing filter that limits the LLM to approved domains
- Use Llama Guard for open-source, customizable safety classification
- Measure and tune filter precision/recall on your use case
Content filtering architecture¶
Not all filtering happens at the same place in the pipeline. Different checks serve different purposes:

Topic-based domain filtering¶
For focused applications (customer support bots, medical assistants, code helpers), block out-of-scope queries before spending tokens on the main LLM.

Multi-label content classification¶
Some use cases require fine-grained classification across multiple harm categories.

Keyword and pattern-based filters¶
For high-speed pre-filtering without LLM costs, use keyword lists and regex patterns. These are not your primary defense but make a useful first-pass triage.

Keyword filters are easily bypassed
Keyword lists have high false negative rates — attackers add spaces ("d a n"), substitute characters ("D4N"), or use synonyms. Use pattern filters as a fast first pass only. Never rely on them as your sole defense.
Rate limiting and abuse detection¶
Adversarial users often probe your system repeatedly. Track per-user metrics to detect and throttle abuse.

Log everything, block judiciously
Log every blocked request with the user ID, timestamp, input (truncated), and block reason. This audit trail is essential for identifying attack patterns, tuning thresholds, and handling appeals. Never silently drop requests — return a clear message and log the block.
