Bias and Fairness¶
LLMs inherit biases from training data. When your system makes decisions that affect people — hiring, lending, medical triage, content moderation — those biases can cause measurable harm. Auditing for bias is not optional; it is a professional responsibility.

Sources of bias in LLMs¶
Training data bias

Bias is not always visible
The most dangerous biases are subtle: a resume screener that uses different language to describe equivalent candidates from different groups, or a medical assistant that downplays symptoms when the patient profile suggests a minority group. These don't raise moderation flags — they require explicit measurement to detect.
Counterfactual bias testing¶
Counterfactual testing swaps demographic terms (names, pronouns, locations) and measures whether model outputs change. Equal treatment means equal outputs for equal inputs that differ only in demographic markers.

Bias auditing is a process, not a checkbox
Run bias audits before launch and after every major prompt change. Document results. Track trends over time. The goal is not to achieve zero disparity (which is impossible) but to detect significant disparities, understand their source, and mitigate where possible. A system with a documented audit and documented mitigations is defensible; one without is not.
